Lockdown in Sydney causes retail chaos

As lock down hits the country, Sydney businesses are feeling the pain of the lockdowns with foot traffic in retail areas down by 60 to 80 per cent. It is expected that clothing retail sales will drop by up to 8 per cent.

Super Retail Group is looking for positives in the current lock downs that are gripping parts of the country. Super Retail Group are owners of the popular Supercheap Auto chain which has continued to flourish during lockdown.

Super Retail Group has controversially continued to open their stores during lockdown despite government advising that Sydneysiders are only allowed to leave home and go shopping for essential items. Super Cheap Group’s chief executive Anthony Heraghty has defended the move stating that allowing staff to go in will keep them engaged and their stores did offer a big range of essential items.

There is no strict rules on what constitutes essential items however Super Cheap Group believes their products such as gym equipment, car essentials and sporting goods are essential items for people. They also believe that it has not been stipulated that they must close their stores.

Super Cheap Auto will willingly comply with all government health directives if that means they are not allowed to open for customers and provide a click and collect service only.
